Ego vs. Confidence

  • I used to think confidence was something you either had or didn’t.

Now, I think of it differently.

To me, confidence is less about being fearless, certain, or completely secure—and more about knowing yourself well enough to trust that you are worthy, even when you’re struggling.

Confidence is the reputation we have with ourselves.

I sometimes think of this as connecting with your higher self – the part of you that can step outside the panic, comparison, old stories, and expectations long enough to ask:

What do I actually know to be true about myself?

Because there are a lot of things that can make that voice harder to hear.

Bullying. Rejection. Racism. Discrimination. Difficult relationships. Family dynamics. Trauma. Social media. Expectations about what we should look like, accomplish, or become.

Over time, experiences like these can shape the stories we tell ourselves:

    I’m not enough.

    I have to prove myself.

I need everyone to approve of me.

Something about me needs to change before I can feel good about myself.

Confidence is not pretending those experiences never happened.

It is learning that they do not get the final word.

So, What Does Practicing Confidence Actually Look Like?

    Celebrate your resilience.
You have already lived through things you once did not know how you would get through. Give yourself credit for that.

Notice the way you speak to yourself.
Thoughts are not automatically facts. Mindfulness can help us notice the difference between having a thought and believing everything it says.

    Practice self-compassion.
You cannot bully yourself into becoming a better version of yourself.

Practice gratitude without using it to dismiss what hurts.
You can appreciate what is good and still acknowledge what is difficult. Both can exist at the same time.

Get curious about the stories you inherited.
Not every belief you carry about yourself actually started with you. You are allowed to question it.

Remember that confidence is a practice.
There is no final level where you become completely healed, endlessly confident, and never question yourself again.

The goal is not to eliminate every insecurity.

It is to build a relationship with yourself that can hold you through them.

And maybe that is what confidence really is:

Not believing you are perfect – but knowing you do not have to be perfect to be worthy of your own love.
